Aurora Borealis

Aurora borealis adalah salah satu fenomena alam terindah di Bumi. Merekam keindahannya dengan kamera, apalagi dalam kondisi terang bulan purnama, bukanlah hal mudah sebab cahaya aurora borealis akan "kalah" oleh cahaya bulan.

Tapi, fotografer asal Jerman Kerstin Langenberger berhasil melakukannya. Dalam fotonya, aurora borealis terlihat terang dalam cahaya Bulan, seolah fenomena tersebut muncul di siang bolong.

Langenberger berhasil memotret setelah menantinya selama 300 jam menunggu fenomena itu muncul. Ia mengungkapkan, "Aurora harus sangat terang untuk bisa tampak saat ada Bulan. Ini jarang terjadi sehingga gambar seperti ini sangat jarang."

Foto Langenberger berhasil menguak keindahan Thingvellir National Park, tempat pengambilan foto yang menjadi salah satu situs warisan dunia UNESCO. Dalam foto itu, aurora tampak sebagai ledakan cahaya hijau dan ungu.

Aurora dijumpai di Kutub Utara dan kutub selatan Bumi. Aurora yang dijumpai di kutub utara disebut Aurora Borealis atau Northern Light sementara yang dijumpai di Kutub selatan disebut Aurora Australis.

Fenomena ini muncul akibat partikel bermuatan dari Matahari yang dihantarkan ke Bumi. Partikel tersebut tertarik oleh medan magnet Bumi, melepaskan energi hingga menghasilkan cahaya di lapisan ionosfer.

Kemunculannya tiba-tiba. Langenberger harus tiba di lokasi siang hari sehingga bisa mempersiapkan semua alat-alat untuk memotret. Malam harinya, ia harus sabar menanti si aurora datang.

"Kesulitannya adalah mengetahui dimana aurora muncul dan seperti apa nanti. Untuk waktu lama, tak ada yang terjadi dan hanya bisa menunggu. Namun, tiba-tiba langit malam hari mengalami ledakan aurora," kata Langenberger.

Langenberger mengungkapkan, "Ledakan aurora biasanya bertahan hingga beberapa menit, lalu ia akan menghilang. Aurora mungkin muncul lagi, tetapi bisa juga tidak. Tak ada yang tahu nantinya."

Aurora bukan hanya bisa muncul di Bumi. Hubble Space Telescope pernah menangkap fenomena aurora di Jupiter dan Saturnus, bahkan di satelit Jupiter yaitu Io, Europa dan Ganymede. Uranus dan Neptunus dilaporkan juga memiliki aurora.
